Wabi-sabi – Mother Nature whittles while she works

On a recent hike I picked up a twig. Click on any photo to enlarge.

The noun twig means “a small shoot or branch” but the verb means “notice, observe.” [Thanks, Merriam-Webster!] I stopped mid-hike to twig the twig’s

knobby nodes, gorgeous grooves and cool cross-hatching

and marvel at its cabled core.

Wabi-sabi represents a Japanese aesthetic centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. (Paraphrased from this excellent Wiki article on the subject.)

rough. impermanent. beautiful.

Wabi-sabi brought to you by Mother Nature.
